What We Believe

Back

The true gospel is news about what Christ the Saviour has already done for us (in his life, death and resurrection), rather than instruction and advice about what we are to do for God. Christ’s accomplishment, not ours, is the essence of the gospel.

In doctrine and practice, we emphasize the grace of God in the Gospel!

We hold to the five “solas” of the Reformation:

  • Sola Scriptura – the Scripture alone is our final authority in every area of our personal lives, because it is the inerrant Word of God. Furthermore Scripture alone is the final authority in every area of church life
  • Sola Christi – Christ alone, in His perfect life and atoning death in the sinner’s place, is the only basis for our acceptance with God
  • Sola Gratia – the grace of God alone in Christ, not works of human merit or effort, is how God saves sinners
  • Sola Fide – faith alone is the means by which sinners receive or appropriate this grace of God
  • Soli Deo Gloria – to God alone be the glory for saving sinners and governing everything in this life and the life to come

As a church, we also affirm the BFM 2000 and the historic doctrinal statement of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary aka  Abstract of Principles 1858.

We believe that God takes broken lives and by His sovereign grace restores those lives no matter how messy they are!  We understand that no one seeks God on their own (Romans 3:10-12) and that everyone is conceived and born into this world as a sinner (Psalm 51:5Ephesians 2:3;Romans 3) God has provided a way for forgiveness and calls believers in Jesus Christ to share this good news with everyone! (Matthew 28:18-20)  We are to call all people to repent (Romans 6:23; Matthew 3:2;Acts 3:19), believe in Christ as Savior (Romans 10), and submit to Him as Lord.  (Luke 9:23Romans 10:9).

At Summerlin Community Church you will find a strong emphasis on the Grace of God in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We are not perfect people nor are we a perfect church. We are a group of believers growing in God’s grace.  We desire to  be a spiritually healthy church.  We understand that spiritual growth is a process and that no one is at the same place in their growth.  Through the preaching and teaching ministry of the Word, all Christians at Summerlin are encouraged to grow in their relationship with God by spending time daily in the word of God and prayer and by participating in Bible studies, worship, fellowship, prayer, outreach and service. (Romans 12:1; Acts 2:42)

How can someone be in a right relationship with God?

Romans 3:20-23  20 For no one can ever be made right in God’s sight by doing what his law commands. For the more we know God’s law, the clearer it becomes that we aren’t obeying it.  21 But now God has shown us a different way of being right in his sight– not by obeying the law but by the way promised in the Scriptures long ago.  22 We are made right in God’s sight when we trust in Jesus Christ to take away our sins. And we all can be saved in this same way, no matter who we are or what we have done. 23 For all have sinned; all fall short of God’s glorious standard.

1 Corinthians 15:3-4   3 I passed on to you what was most important and what had also been passed on to me– that Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said.  4 He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day, as the Scriptures said.  Acts 3:19   19 Now turn from your sins and turn to God, so you can be cleansed of your sins.

Romans 5:1-2 Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us.  2 Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of highest privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory.

Romans 10:8-11   8 Salvation that comes from trusting Christ– which is the message we preach– is already within easy reach. In fact, the Scriptures say, “The message is close at hand; it is on your lips and in your heart.”  9 For if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.  10 For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved.  11 As the Scriptures tell us, “Anyone who believes in him will not be disappointed.

Ephesians 2:8-9  8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,  9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.

Do Many Roads Lead to God? No

John 14:6   6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
